NH: Osceola and East Osceola

Climbed two of the NH 4000 footers today. The Mt. Osceola trail, from the Tripoli Road trailhead, was a very gradual walk to the summit of Osceola (3.2 miles of mostly rocks). The summit of Osceola used to have a fire tower, as you can see by the cement block bases that were left behind. The one mile walk to East Osceola was more challenging, especially the spot known as “the chimney” – a steep vertical climb at the base of Osceola facing the col. There is a bypass to the left, though it is only slightly less steep. I found it reminiscent of the challenge coming down from Hough in the Dix Range of the ADKs. There was an inch or two of snow on the ridgeline, and a good amount of ice on this hike – it’s definitely microspike season.

  1. Pru – great pictures and post. So happy you were finally able to do this hike. Boy, didn’t look like a particularly easy hike. Fair dues to you. Pictures look awesome btw!!

    • Thanks so much, Noel! Wish you could have been with me – you would have had a blast, but you definitely would have needed microspikes. It actually was pretty easy – only the “chimney” was challenging. Let me know when you’re up for another go at hiking in the Whites!

  2. congrats on your first two NH peaks! I see another goal possibly starting. your pics are gorgeous; have me intrigued totally. hopefully we can get together and do a bit of NH hiking together!
